INFORMATION & TRAINING CENTER & CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

With a library of 10,000 books and a regular series of professional and refresher programs for the public,  the Center serves as a venue for understanding American-Indonesian relations on a variety of issues. Among the most popular programs is a workshop for journalists onAmerican mass media. In 1990 and 1994 the center has conducted a short course for young diplomats from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Support for the improvement of the Center’s certificate programs will increase its productivity in developing skills of analysis and expression that serve students exceptionally well in whatever interests they pursue. The American Studies Center involves faculty members from several departments and draw on a broad range of knowledge from humanities and the social sciences. Students of the Center’s certificate programs are allowed a wide-ranging yet disciplined exploration of topics and questions that cross the boundaries of traditional academic fields.

Admission to this selective certificate programs depends in part on academic distinction and on demonstrated interest in the subject area.

PUBLICATIONS & CONFERENCES

To stimulate research and publication, the Center publishes a journal and  monographs. To build networking with Americanists both in Indonesia and abroad, the Center holds conferences in Indonesia and sends delegates to American Studies conferences abroad, especially to South East Asia and Pacific countries. Working together with Americanists from other universities and institutions in Indonesia, the Center has conducted conferences on various topics in American culture.

To create better understanding, to convey knowledge on issues relevant to Indonesian-American relations for better policy making, the center organizes Education-Oriented Community Service Programs. Direct engagement with Indonesia’s citizens, communities, and the private business sector will be instrumental in reducing poverty, improving health, building democratic values, and allowing citizens to compete in the global market place.

“In today’s world, the study of other culture is not just luxury … it is a necessity. The American Studies program at the University of Indonesia shows all the signs of becoming a vital addition to the important dialogue between Indonesia and the United States … It deserves all of our support.”
— S.I. Hayakawa, U.S. Senate, 1981.
